Panel Welcomes New Mainstream Technology AMOLED Revenue Will Exceed LCD

IHS Markit said today that active organic light-emitting diodes (AMOLEDs) will become the mainstream technology for small and medium-sized panels in 2016, and AMOLED's revenue will exceed the revenue of traditional amorphous silicon (a-Si) LCD panels in 2016.

IHS said that global small and medium-sized panel revenue in 2016 was 43.4 billion US dollars. Among them, AMOLED panels have emerged in the small and medium size market. It is estimated that 2016 revenue will be 14.3 billion U.S. dollars, and low temperature polycrystalline silicon panel (LTPS) revenue will be 14.7 billion U.S. dollars. AMOLED will surpass the mainstream amorphous silicon (a-Si) in the current market. LCD screen revenue, amorphous silicon LCD revenue was 14 billion US dollars.

IrHiroshi Hayase, senior research director of IHS, pointed out that the rapid growth of AMOLED panels is mainly driven by the demand for flexible displays used in smartphones, tablets and wearable devices, and AMOLED is considered by the market as the next major display technology.

The current mainstream a-Si LCD panel in the market will eventually become a traditional display technology. In the future, demand and application will gradually decrease, especially in the use of smart phone panels.

Hiroshi Hayase pointed out that in 2016, the strong demand for AMOLED displays in smartphones was mainly from Samsung ’s Galaxy S series. After Samsung Display began to take out AMOLED, Chinese brands OPPO and VIVO also actively joined the AMOLED camp and applied it For mobile phone panels, Samsung ’s Galaxy J also uses AMOLED panels.

Samsung's Note7 battery problems, and a large recall of Note7, poor sales, will hinder the sales performance of AMOLED panels, in addition, because of Samsung outsourcing, Apple's iPhone7 will be a direct beneficiary.

At present, Apple iPhone7 orders have strong demand in the United States, which has reversed the sales of AMOLED panels. IHS pointed out that although the small and medium-sized AMOLED display market has grown strongly in 2016, the problem of Samsung ’s recall may make this trend in 2016. The correction is made in the fourth quarter. As for the extent of the correction, it still depends on the situation of the market reshuffle.
