Although the Korean factory is still the most active and leading position in the development of OLED technology, Taiwanese manufacturers including AU Optronics, Chi Mei Optoelectronics, and mainland China BOE, Tianma, Visionox, etc. are also making progress.
OLED organic light-emitting displays have become a new generation of display technology, and are gradually expanding in small and medium-sized applications. Mainly because OLED displays have the advantages of active illumination (free of backlight), high contrast, low power consumption, no viewing angle limitation, fast response and so on. Although the Korean factory is still the most active and leading position in the development of OLED technology, Taiwanese manufacturers including AU Optronics, Chi Mei Optoelectronics, and mainland China BOE, Tianma, Visionox, etc. are also making progress.
According to the information of Nikkei BP, Tianma has also converted the original 4.5-generation TFT-LCD production line into an OLED panel production line. In 2013, the 5.5-generation line capacity will be invested in the production of OLED panels. BOE BOE has developed a 4-inch OLED panel and completed the 5.5-generation OLED panel production line in Ordos. It is expected to be mass-produced by the end of 2013.
As for the OLED displays developed by Visionox and Tsinghua Dahua, it is reported that Tsinghua University has signed a framework agreement with Kunshan City to build a 5.5-generation OLED production line, and is expected to invest 15 billion yuan. However, the specific production schedule is still unclear.
In Taiwan's panel factory, according to the manufacturer's instructions, AUO has started mass production of small-size (mobile phone application) OLED panels in the third quarter of this year, and the company is located in Singapore's 4.5-generation line (15,000 pieces per month). It will also be officially put into production of OLED panels in 2013. In addition, AUO has published a flexible OLED display with a thickness of 0.3 mm, a resolution of 240x320 and a bending radius of 10mm.
Chi Mei Electronics currently develops OLED panels in the previous production line of Tongbao and uses white organic materials with color filter technology. The company's earlier products have been 3.4-inch, 4.3-inch TRUE OLED panels with a resolution of 326 ppi, which claims to be produced without the need for a sophisticated metal mask process, and can suppress the color cast of traditional OLED displays. It is expected that small and medium-sized OLED panels will still be used in the initial stage, and it is likely to be produced in small quantities at the end of 2012 or early 2013 at the earliest.
