In the first half of the year, the global machine market was weak, and smartphone panel shipments fell. According to Qunzhi Consulting, the global smartphone panel shipments in the first half of this year were 930 million, down 1.7% year-on-year.
Although the smart phone display market has a trend of innovation such as full-screen and shaped-shaped screens, the smartphone panel still has a slight decline due to the weak overall demand. However, there are significant differences in products of different specifications.
In terms of product categories, the shipment share of a-Si LCD (including Oxide LCD) panel dropped from 50% in the first half of last year to 42% this year, and shipments decreased to 390 million units, with the increase in display product specifications. The market share of a-Si LCD products is gradually being squeezed by LTPS LCD and AMOLED.
LTPS LCD panels are eye-catching in the weak market environment. In the first half of this year, LTPS LCD smart phone panels shipped 340 million units, an increase of 23.7%; the increase in shipments includes: incell touch Trends such as control, full screen and shaped screens have increased the demand for high-profile display products in the smartphone market; the sufficient capacity of LTPS LCDs has lowered the price of products while ensuring the supply of panel products.
In the smart phone display products, the market share of LTPS LCD has increased from 29% in the first half of last year to 36% in the first half of this year, and the growth rate is very significant. In the first half of the year, the shipment volume of AMOLED panels decreased slightly, down 2.6% year-on-year. The number of shipments has been reduced to 200 million pieces. However, due to the relatively stable market share of AMOLED, it still accounts for 21% of the market share of smartphone display products.
OLED panels have long been regarded as high-end products, and they have begun to change the market landscape because they have surpassed LCD panels in terms of performance and price competitiveness.
OLEDs have excellent image quality and thin and light characteristics. In addition, flexible OLED panels with robust mass substrates are also easier to produce for full screens.
According to IHS Markit data, the share of smartphone OLED panels has continued to grow from 40.8% in 2016 to 45.7% this year. In 2019, the market share of OLED panels is expected to exceed the market share of TFT-LCD panels for the first time.
Next year, sales of OLED panels are expected to reach 20.7 billion US dollars, and the share of the smartphone market is expected to reach 50.7%. On the other hand, sales of TFT-LCD panels are expected to reach US$20.2 billion, accounting for 49.3% of the smartphone market share. And its market share is expected to reach 73% in 2025.
