It is reported that although China's share of the global display business is growing rapidly, Korean display manufacturers are still the undisputed leader in future innovation.
At CES 2019, held recently, Merck Performance Materials CEO Kai Beckmann said: "In fact, China has always attached great importance to the development of display technology. However, if you look at those big companies, you can find that Korean companies are Innovation is still very good.” He pointed out that Korean panel makers, including Samsung Display and LG Display, are key players in driving next-generation display technologies, such as flexible OLED displays.
Headquartered in Germany, Merck is a high-performance materials and solutions provider dedicated to the production of memory chips, processors, LCDs and OLED technology for smartphones and any electronic device. The world's leading display panel and semiconductor manufacturers, including South Korea's Samsung, LG and SK Hynix Semiconductor, are major customers of Merck's Performance Materials business unit.
At this year's CES 2019, many suppliers have introduced a number of products using the next generation of flexible display panels, including LG Electronics' rollable TV.
LG Signature OLED TV R is considered one of the most impressive innovations at this year's Technology Show and is expected to begin sales in the second half of this year. It is also the world's first commercial roll-to-roll TV.
Shenzhen Rouyu Technology Co., Ltd. (Royole) also became the highlight of this year's technology show by showing the world's first collapsible smartphone with flexible display: Royole FlexPai.
Beckmann said that while these technologies are really impressive, it is still too early to determine if they will succeed after commercialization.
