According to industry sources, Samsung Display is preparing to accelerate the mass production of foldable panels, so a working group dedicated to this new technology was recently established.
The team was formed last month under the company's OLED product development department, with more than 200 members from Samsung Display from other research labs and related business units within the company; the team leader is the current implementation of Samsung Display's OLED business unit. The vice president, who currently does not hold other positions, focuses on the company's collapsible display project.
According to sources, the establishment of the new team implies that Samsung's first foldable smartphone will be available on a large scale.
A source who asked not to be named said: "Researchers who have conducted research in the early stages of the technology are joining the new team in order to realize the popularity of the technology as soon as possible."
The Samsung Display Manufacturing division is in line with recent comments by Koh Dong-jin, head of Samsung's mobile business, and reiterated the company's plan to launch its first foldable smartphone. He said: "For foldable smartphones, we don't want to lose the number one spot in the world. So far, due to quality and durability issues, we are cautious about the comments posted on the new phones, but now the relevant issues have been resolved, We are about to enter the final stage."
According to sources, as Samsung initially decided on the release plan of the new foldable mobile phone, key component manufacturers including Samsung Display are ready to provide relevant screens. Samsung showed that an official also confirmed the establishment of the TF, but denied any plans for mass production of foldable panels.
