Demand For Flexible OLED Panels Will Pick Up In 2019

- Sep 04, 2018-

According to related news, the mobile phone supplier represented by Samsung is expected to launch the first foldable smartphones by the end of 2018 or early 2019. This trend will drive the industry's demand for flexible OLED panels.

Although Samsung has seen the fastest growth in the field of flexible OLEDs, BOE is also catching up, aiming to compete with Samsung to obtain Apple's OLED panel orders.

In response to the increasingly fierce competition, LG Display is also accelerating the development of related technologies, aiming to provide OLED panels to mobile phone manufacturers in the middle of 2019, even if the number is small. At the same time, it will narrow the gap with Samsung in the small and medium-sized OLED panel field. .

According to sources, most of the foldable smartphone models launched by mobile phone manufacturers are designed with an internal fold-down design for flexible displays; the technical complexity is much lower than with externally designed display designs. However, displays with a folded design still have to overcome many problems, such as dust easily entering the curved surface of the flexible display, and further increasing the number of folds of the flexible display. At the same time, with the disclosure of the foldable model, the development of flexible OLED panels has also shifted from the first phase centered on the bendable model to the second phase of the development of the foldable panel with a radius of curvature of less than 1.0R.

As substrates play a key role in the production of flexible OLED panels, material suppliers have also introduced colorless polyimides (PI) with high light transmission, heat resistance and low coefficient of thermal expansion, thus producing flexible OLED panels. Ideal.

It is reported that Samsung Display may have completed the development of OLED panels with a radius of curvature of less than 1.0R, and is conducting tests on foldable smartphones manufactured by Samsung Electronics. At the same time, LG Display expects to complete its 1.0R OLED panel development process by the scheduled time set by the end of 2019.
