According to foreign media reports, in the second quarter, the iPhone X, which used the OLED screen for the first time, sold less than the iPhone 8 Plus with LCD screens in the United States. Therefore, Apple may continue to use the LCD screen in the 2019 version of the iPhone.

The report said that the good sales of the iPhone X did increase the average selling price of Apple's mobile phone, but because its price of 999 US dollars is too high, it did not usher in the "super cycle" that analysts expected. iPhone X sales in the US in the second quarter are not even as good as the iPhone 8 Plus with LCD screens, and the price of the iPhone 8 Plus is not much cheaper than the iPhone X. Based on this, Apple will continue to use LCD screens in the 2019 version of the iPhone.

In addition, according to Korean media reports, Apple may let LG as its screen supplier. Apple plans to use LCD displays in its 6.1-inch version of the iPhone this year to meet lower-priced market demand. It is said that the main way to reduce the cost of mobile phones is the screen selection.

The OLED name is "Organic Light-Emitting Diode", which is an organic self-luminous material, which makes the OLED screen no longer need a backlight module, so it can be made thinner in thickness. Moreover, OLED also has a wide color gamut, almost infinite contrast, extremely high response speed, flexibility, power saving, etc., so it is also called the "fantasy display technology". Many people believe that OLED will be the technology of choice for future smartphone screens because it displays clearer images and saves power.

Last year, Apple was preparing to launch the iPhone X with OLED screens, so Samsung-based suppliers followed suit to increase OLED production capacity on a large scale. However, the reality is that the iPhone X is not as popular as the market expected. OLED screens are also not perfect. There are still problems such as burn-in, color shift and so on. Among them, the problem of burn-in (the display will leave a residual image if it displays a still image for a long time) is not the exclusive short-board of the OLED screen, because the traditional LCD screen also has this problem. However, the burn-in problem of the OLED screen may greatly reduce the life of the screen.

In contrast, LCDs are more mature and cheaper. In the case that the cost can be determined, Apple can save costs by using LCD, and even no longer rely on Samsung to achieve a diversified product line.

The news said that Apple will also use LCD screens next year, because LG insiders said that they are not ready to transform their Apple-specific LCD screen production line into an OLED screen production line, apparently because Apple decided to abandon plans to adopt OLED screens at the last minute.
