Folding screen mobile phone bursting red OLED panel industry chain welcomes new opportunities

- Apr 23, 2019-

Production yield needs to be improved

In addition to technical difficulties, the yield of flexible display panels is also relatively low, the reliability and yield of flexible touch technology and materials are also low, and the supply is very small. According to the industry, the date of the launch of Huawei's 5G folding mobile phone Mate X is still undecided. Because the "Folding Panel", the core component of the folding mobile phone, cannot be supplied normally, the production time is also delayed. Panel issues will be the key to the competition for visible folding screen phones.

According to industry sources, although Huawei has released Mate X prototypes in MWC2019, it wants to have a stable supply of folding displays, but BOE, which supplies Mate X folding displays, has yield problems, so mass production is required. Mate X may take a long time.

According to the DSCC, a display market regulator, BOE’s production yield of small and medium-sized soft OLED (organic light-emitting diode) panels was only 30% in the fourth quarter of last year. On the other hand, South Korea's small and medium-sized soft OLED panel production yield has reached 80%. According to industry sources, BOE's factory produced 2.5 million smart phone OLED panels to the maximum extent last year, which only reached a global market share of 1.6%, and produced 150 million panels last year, with a market share of 93. 1% of Samsung monitors are much behind.

When will the folding screen phone be cut?

At the end of February this year, Liu Zihong, the founder of Rouyu Technology, released a parameter comparison chart on Weibo, which was based on Huawei Mate X, Samsung Galaxy Fold and Rouyu's own Flexa.

Softwoo/Samsung/Huawei Folding Screen Phone Comparison Who is more competitive?

As can be seen from the table comparison, this product highlights the advantages of Rouyu, including the world's first launch, price, dual card dual standby and bendable times. In the case of Samsung Huawei has sold for more than 15,000 yuan, and Johor is only 8999 yuan, the price may look very advantageous. At the same time, Samsung does not support dual card dual standby and the number of screen bends is only a few hundred thousand times, and Rouyu can bend more than 200,000 times. Liu Zihong said that the price of the product is very important: "As a good product, of course, it is necessary to return to the point, that is, let the user buy it, can afford it, and use it well."

However, this comparison has some inclinations. There are no mentions about the screen resolution, battery capacity, body design, camera and other weak parameters, so it is still impossible to say that it is so bad, because the new form of folding screen mobile phone is still in use. At the beginning of the market, it was not mature.

Recently, Huawei's consumer business CEO Yu Chengdong said in an interview with German media that Huawei's goal is to reduce the price of folding screen phones to 1,000 euros in one or two years.

Yu Chengdong also pointed out that under the competition of various equipment manufacturers, folding screen equipment may soon usher in a breakthrough of 500 euros. If the market response is more positive, each manufacturer may accelerate mass production at any time.

Talking about the opponent, Yu Chengdong said that Huawei and Samsung are very close in terms of shipment volume, and they will surpass Samsung to take the leading position in the smart phone industry before next year. As for Apple, Yu Chengdong’s point of view is that Huawei’s ability to innovate far exceeds the former. After all, it’s hard for Apple to come up with a folding screen phone this year or even next year.

As Xu Feng, senior vice president and CEO of ZTE, said that the flexible folding screen mobile phone is not too mature yet, this is a direction worthy of attention, and it needs to see further reaction from market customers.

To be sure, the foldable screen mobile phone product is an important business card for mobile phone manufacturers to prove their ability to develop and innovate. Whose folding screen is bigger, whose hinges are more durable, and whose body is thinner...

But for now, the screen supply of major mobile phone manufacturers is basically in the process of cooperative R&D. For example, Huawei is using BOE, while ZTE and Xiaomi are using Vision.

Whether a product can successfully establish itself in the mainstream market is no longer a solitary battle, but an advantage of integrating the entire industry chain. Therefore, on the track of the folding screen mobile phone, who can take the lead in breaking through the cost limit, launching mature products, and achieving mass production, who is capable of grasping the opportunities.
