Can't catch up with OLED, Taiwan panel companies intend to overtake with miniLED corner

- Aug 28, 2018-

Taiwan's panel Shuanghu AUO and Innolux recently demonstrated their miniLED panel technology in Taiwan's Touch Taiwan, which is expected to be mass-produced as soon as next year. This confirms that they have abandoned the hot OLED panel technology, with the intention of miniLED panels. Technology achieves overtaking of corners.
Panel industry Feng Shui turns
The current global panel technology is dominated by TFT-LCD, which has been developed for 50 years. In 1968, RCA Corporation of the United States developed a dynamic scattering-type liquid crystal display. In the 1970s, Japanese companies industrialized the twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal display invented by Switzerland, which made Japan the world's largest producer of liquid crystal panels and maintained it until 1990. Age.
Since the 1990s, Korean company Samsung has been involved in the TFT-LCD industry on a large scale. From 1990 to 1997, it endured a seven-year loss in the LCD panel business. In 1998, it became the world's largest LCD panel manufacturer. At this time, TFT -LCD has entered a stage of rapid development and is popularized in products such as notebook computers. In the same period, South Korea's LGD also rose rapidly. In the end, South Korea relied on Samsung and LGD two panel manufacturers to surpass Japan to become the world's largest LCD panel production site.
Since the beginning of 2000, the panel companies in Taiwan have risen. At that time, Taiwan formed the “panel five tigers” pattern consisting of AUO, CPT, Guanghui Electronics, Chi Mei Optoelectronics, and Hanyu Caijing. The market share even exceeded South Korea, but at that time, Taiwan’s five panel makers were not performing well or even losing money. The global financial crisis in 2008 slammed panel makers in Taiwan, leading to the final integration of Taiwan’s panel makers into today’s group. AUO's "panel double tiger" pattern, and South Korea once again regained the world's largest LCD panel production.
In 2003, BOE in mainland China obtained LCD panel manufacturing enterprises through the modern LCD panel production line in Korea. Starting from this, it has thoroughly mastered the panel production technology through several years of research and development investment. In 2009, it invested in the construction of the advanced 8.5 generation line; In the same period, TCL's Huaxing Optoelectronics was established and the advanced 8.5-generation line was built from the beginning. The panel production capacity in mainland China increased rapidly. By 2016, mainland China replaced China Taiwan as the world's second largest panel production site.
In 2015, BOE announced the construction of the world's most advanced 10.5 generation line. In 2016, Huaxing Optoelectronics announced the construction of the world's most advanced 11th generation line. China's two panel manufacturers started the panel production technology competition, BOE's 10.5 generation line. At the end of last year, the 11th generation line of Huaxing Optoelectronics will be put into production next year. The second 10.5/11 generation line of the two panel manufacturers has entered the construction. It is expected that China will replace Korea as the world next year. The largest LCD panel production site.
Panel technology battle
When China invested heavily in advanced LCD panel production lines, global LCD panels began to show overcapacity since the second half of last year. LCD panel prices continued to fall. In the second quarter of this year, BOE notified TV companies that their panels would be sold at a 20% price reduction. Considering that the 10.5/11 generation lines of BOE and Huaxing Optoelectronics will be put into production one after another, it is expected that this overcapacity will lead to a price cut.
In fact, before the LCD panel began to cut prices, Korean panel manufacturers have realized that they are difficult to compete with Chinese panel companies in terms of cost. Therefore, OLED panel technology is laid down, and it is hoped to resist the competition of Chinese panel companies by using more advanced panel technology.
