AUO expects that due to the growing demand for high-end LCD products, its newly expanded second-stage facility at the 8.5G 8B plant in central Taiwan will be fully operational in the third quarter of 2018.
According to sources, the first phase of the AUO 8B plant currently has a capacity of 77,000 substrates per month, while the second phase of the facility will add 25,000 to 30,000 additional substrates.
At the same time, AUO has shifted its strategy to more high value-added panels and large-size panels to cope with the increased capacity of China's next-generation LCD manufacturers and the increasing popularity of large-size TVs.
As the industry's demand for high-end display products exceeds its supply capacity, AUO is increasing the capacity of its 8B plant; it is also considering the implementation of the third phase of the expansion project. The company is currently operating another 8.5G plant (8A) in the Central Taiwan Science Park (CTSP), which produces 50,000 substrates per month.
According to sources, AUO's shipments of ultra-large TV panels in the second quarter of 2018 increased by more than 20% quarter-on-quarter. In 2018, total shipments of large-size TV panels doubled year-on-year.
According to statistics, in the equipment terminal market, sales of 65-inch and 75-inch TVs worldwide are expected to increase by 30-40% and 50% respectively in 2018.
